Providing Low Vision Services to Winter Park, Fl.

Your optometrist in Winter Park is proud to serve the low vision community! Dr. Richardson specializes in low vision and has all the tools and aids to assist patients from limited vision to complete blindness.

In the state of Florida, an organization named Division of Blind Services (DBS) has funds available to support patients that fall within two categories: the patient has to be a  student and / or working to qualify. The idea is that the state will provide these patients the testing and aids to allow them to be as self sufficient as possible and contributing to society by furthering their education and or continuing and excelling at their employment.

What Is Low Vision?

What exactly is low vision you ask? Although he wishes low vision was renamed to a more glamorous name, Dr. Richardson’s simplified definition is when traditional eyeglasses and contact lenses fail to correct your vision sufficiently, these patients are considered low vision. Technology and devices are the tools used to maximize the patient’s own remaining vision.

Take The First Step In New Vision

The first step before trying devices is to conduct a thorough case history to establish the root cause of why the vision has decreased. An ocular coherence tomographer (OCT) is a helpful tool to assess the retina and other ocular structures. This device is similar to an ultrasound except using light vs sound. It facilitates visualization of many of the layers of the eye to the microscopic level, and completely uninvasive and fast. This technology is also used to fit contact lenses in Winter park for patients with irregular or damaged corneas with scleral contact lenses. A careful refraction using trial lenses is also important to maximize the clarity of vision for each eye. Trial lenses are used to minimize proximity effects and also to allow patients to maximize their vision using off center viewing as necessary.

After the case history and testing, your eye doctor in Winter Park will very carefully ask you what tools you have been using such as eyeglasses and magnifiers but more importantly Dr. Richardson will ask you to list two to three very specific visual tasks. It is important to concentrate on specific tasks in order to make the proper recommendation on device or tool to use for that task.

We Offer Many Different Devices.

Many patients want to be able to participate in meetings or in the classroom and need to see the presenter at a distance. Telescopes mounted on glasses or distance video cameras that can project distance on a hand held screen are good choices for this task. Other patients prefer to use augmented or virtual reality devices to magnify tasks at both far and near. For these devices you will not be able to use your eyeglasses and will need to use contact lenses when using these devices. Hand held magnifiers with traditional lenses or the new video magnifiers really help with close near tasks. These devices usually have an LED light to help with contrast and brightness and reduce glare. Filter glasses can really provide improved contrast especially indoors and in low light environments. Yellow, amber and Rose tints are very popular. One last device that your optometrist in Winter Park can recommend is a closed circuit television (CCTV) designed to magnify print and change contrast as necessary. These are the most convenient for reading books or taking care of personal bills.
